Accepting our Circumstances

God’s sovereignty is the pillow upon which the Christian head rests through a stormy night. But it’s not enough to clutch God’s sovereignty. We must rest in the promises of God’s Word, that God is all-wise, that he’s good, and that his sovereignty bends all of our experiences, even the nasty ones, towards life and glory. It was Spurgeon who said:

“Remember this, had any other condition been better for you than the one in which you are, divine love would have put you there.” – Charles Spurgeon

The Bible makes an audacious claim. That rain or shine, we are right where we need to be. When we abound, we grow in gratitude. When we lack, we pursue patience. Through ever-changing weather—the barometer of our hope holds steady because it’s grounded in the grace of a God who never changes.

In heaven, it’s always sunny. Or perhaps we might say, it’s wholly illuminated by the Lamb. Jesus slept through a tempest while the disciples panicked. God, who has claimed you, isn’t fazed by the sudden shock of your unmet desires, your sin struggles, your doubts, or your future. He is Lord over your future and because he is wise, good, and committed to you, we know that we are right where we need to be.
